The driveway of a new home in Belper Derbyshire was laid with 400 square metres of Eco Resin Bound Surfacing with an Autumn Forest aggregate blend. The permeable paving was laid by Ronacrete Approved Contractor Truestone Surfacing.

After a meeting with Nick Smith, Global Development Director for BRE, it was agreed to replace the existing path (a basic mix of type one and sand) with a visually striking resin bound pathway using a selection of aggregate blends from the range – Autumn Harvest, Lunar, Terracotta Snow, Maple Harvest and Quartz Parallel.
The resin bound surfacing was seen as innovative and environmentally friendly due to the following features:

- High quality UV stable formula which ensures long product life cycle

Maple Harvest was laid to two sections; the first at the end of the path and the second at the entrance to an outdoor gym area. Autumn Harvest was then laid in the path centre joining up with the Maple Harvest section. Directly outside the Wilmott Dixon Healthcare Centre, Terracotta Snow was installed and was used to complete the gym path.
An existing cracked resin bound surface was removed from the timber decked ramp that lead to the path and a straight edge steel trim was installed on each side of the ramp. The Lunar aggregate blend was used to complete the path connecting with the base of the ramp and Quartz Parallel was installed on the ramp at a thickness of 20 mm.
Ronacrete also agreed to replace the surfacing of the outdoor gym area which consisted of bark and a very hard type one aggregate with a UV stable rubber granule surfacing system.
A depth of 120 mm was excavated using a digger and once levelled, a geotextile membrane was rolled out. A 100 mm shockpad was then installed on to the membrane. The shockpad is a combination of black rubber granules made from recycled truck tyre carcases mixed with resin and then raked out on to the surface and left to cure over night. Yellow, blue, green and red rubber granules were then used as a wearing surface to provide decoration. All these colours are often vulnerable to UV degradation and discolouration. The pigmented rubber granules were mixed with a UV stable resin, poured on to the surface, levelled to 20 mm and finished with a trowel leaving a smooth, bright and decorative surface which provides safety surfacing for outdoor play areas, swimming pool surrounds etc. whilst retaining their colour.

What is believed to be the largest single resin bound surfacing project in the UK has been completed using Ronacrete’s RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System where more than 7,500m2 has been laid.
You don’t have to live in London to have heard of Shepherd’s Bush! Home to the BBC, Queen’s Park Rangers, the Shepherd’s Bush Empire and (fictitiously) Steptoe and Son! It is thought that Shepherd’s Bush may be so called because shepherds would rest on the green in the centre on their way to Smithfield market. Shepherd’s Bush Green is a triangular area of open grass surrounded by trees and covers approximately eight acres, various paths for cyclists and pedestrians run across it. There are pavements on all three sides of the perimeter, edging on to three busy shopping streets.
Visitors to the area today won’t see any sheep or shepherds roaming the green, but if they look down and around they will be able to see RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing!
The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham appointed specialist contractor FM Conway to lay 7700 square metres of resin bound surfacing to the paths and to paved areas within the park. This was part of a refurbishment project which included improving the routes across and around the Green as well as the planting of further trees and the creation of two children’s play areas.
The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing system was supplied as a two-component UV stable polyurethane resin, this was to be mixed with the Maple Harvest aggregate which the Borough had selected. The resin components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before being added to a large forced action mixer containing the aggregate. Once the aggregate was fully coated with resin FM Conway operatives spread RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing to level and smoothed the surface with a steel float. The finished surface was ready for foot traffic in four hours.
Ronacrete Approved Contractor Avalon Surfacing has transformed the promenade and village green footpaths at Westward Ho! seafront by laying RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing, part of a refurbishment project by Torridge District Council.
The promenade was surfaced by Avalon Surfacing using RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing by Ronacrete, who created two unique aggregate blends for the project. A golden aggregate blend covering 636 square metres and a further 668 square metres of a yellow aggregate blend was laid to the village green footpaths.
When Avalon Surfacing were approached by Torridge District Council for samples of aggregate mixes and costings for the project, Avalon Surfacing turned to Ronacrete for assistance and were able to respond quickly with suitable colour suggestions and a favourable pricing structure.
The brief from the council was to give ‘a modern new finish to the promenade and footpaths to replace the tired grey tarmac that had been there for many years’
The gold and yellow combination gives a warm glow to the area even in the dullest of summer weather a .colourful contrast to the red pirate ship in the children’s play area!

The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing system is supplied as a two component UV stable polyurethane resin together with a blend of kiln-dried aggregates for on-site mixing in a forced action mixer. The two resin components were mixed by Avalon with a drill and paddle before being added to the coloured aggregate in a high capacity forced action mixer. As soon as the aggregate was fully coated with resin, the mixed material was discharged from the mixer and trowel applied at a thickness of 12mm onto the prepared surface. The finished system was ready for foot traffic within four hours of being laid.
RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing is a resin and aggregate mix which creates a hard wearing alternative to traditional paving and comes with a 15 year guarantee when laid by a Ronacrete Approved Contractor such as Avalon Surfacing. The resin is UV resistant so it will not darken or ‘yellow’ when exposed to sunlight, ensuring that the natural colour of the aggregate does not alter as the surfacing ages. The surfacing is also SuDS compliant, as it has a porous structure which prevents surface ponding of rainwater and will allow water to drain naturally when part of a SuDS* compliant construction.
The aggregate provides slip-resistance, while the elasticity of the resin creates a ‘give’ to the surface, meaning that holiday makers and local residents in Westward Ho! can have a safe and comfortable walking experience which is also pleasing to the eye.

The Queen’s Silver Jubilee was marked with the creation of the Jubilee Walkway, an integral part of which was the introduction of pedestrian access along the south bank of the Thames, known as Queen’s Walk.
As part of preparations for the Diamond Jubilee thirty five years later Lambeth Council made the decision to have the area ‘smartened up’. Part of this operation was to replace the worn resin bound surfacing on the Queen’s Walk between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges. The surfacing needed to be laid in time for the Jubilee celebrations which would attract many tourists, particularly for the Jubilee Pageant when crowds would line the banks of the Thames watching over 1,000 vessels participate in a flotilla from Battersea to Tower Bridge..
FM Conway were contracted to lay new resin bound surfacing to 2700 square metres of the 5 metre wide pathway and Sesame Gold aggregate was selected to brighten up the route.
The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System was supplied as a two-component UV stable polyurethane resin, the two components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before being added to a large forced action mixer containing the Sesame Gold aggregate blend. FM Conway spread the RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing to level and smoothed the surface with a steel float. The finished surface was ready for foot traffic within four hours.
Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing satisfies SuDS requirements, allowing rainwater to quickly and easily drain through the porous surface, avoiding puddling. Slip testing shows risk of slip to be generally low, an important consideration for a busy walkway.
The resin bound surfacing was completed in time for the crowds to watch the Jubilee Pageant. Now the ‘golden path’ provides a route which takes tourists and commuters past many well known buildings and locations in the capital city. Starting at Waterloo Bridge it runs past the National Film Theatre and the National Theatre through Gabriel’s Wharf, past the IBM building and London Television Centre alongside Bernie Spain Gardens and through Oxo Tower Wharf passing the art-deco Oxo Tower and Sea Containers House, finishing at Blackfriars Bridge close to the Tate Modern.
Ronacrete Approved Contractor PRC Landscapes was employed to carry out groundworks and landscaping on the 3 acre site, including application of RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing.
The SuDS compliant two-part aggregate system was applied to 650 square metres of a suitable macadam substrate including patios, the driveway and turning circle. The aggregate selected was Harvest Crunch, a blend of naturally coloured aggregates in keeping with the house surroundings. The aggregate colour will not change over time because the elastic polyurethane resin does not degrade when exposed to Ultra Violet light.
The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System was supplied in two components which were mixed together with a drill and paddle before being added to the aggregate blend. The aggregate and resin were then mixed in a high capacity forced action mixer. The mixed material was poured onto the substrate, spread to level and trowel finished at a thickness of 15mm. After completion the paving was ready for foot traffic within four hours and ready for vehicles after 1-2 days.
The drive was on a fairly steep slope and this combined with the lack of slip resistance provided by the macadam meant that vehicles could not get off the drive in icy conditions. As the driveway owner needed to be able to get to work in all weathers he needed to find a surface that would provide sufficient grip for vehicles to pass at sub zero temperatures. Another problem encountered was that the macadam was becoming uneven in places and breaking away from the surface, causing stones to get trodden into the house.
Resin Solutions Ltd discussed various surfacing options with the client and a decision was made to use RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing. It was chosen for its long life expectancy and because it could be used to level off minor surface irregularities in the macadam.
The clients wanted the driveway to incorporate a clearly defined pedestrian area as they had young grandchildren. Resin Solutions Ltd discussed various aggregate combinations that would provide a contrast and advised that a 1m wide border should be included at the perimeter to provide a pedestrian walkway.
The Midnight aggregate blend was selected for the vehicle areas and Terracotta was chosen for the walkway; a steel trim was installed by Resin Solutions Ltd to provide a well defined separation between the walkway and the drive. The work on the 237 square metres of driveway including all preparation was completed within two days.

A property within a development of quality eco-homes in Cuffley, Hertfordshire has extended its green credentials by having SuDS compliant RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing laid to the front driveway and to paths on either side of the ‘high spec’ residence.
Ronacrete Approved Contractors ARC Surfacing laid approximately 200 square metres of RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing, using a 6mm Maple Harvest aggregate which was chosen from the RonaDeck range of natural aggregate blends, each formulated for strength and appearance. The surfacing will not discolour over time because the specially formulated polyurethane resin does not yellow or darken when exposed to Ultra Violet light.
To create a firm foundation for the resin bound paving ARC Surfacing first laid a sound base of asphalt After allowing this time to harden they mixed the RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing two-component resin together with the supplied blended kiln-dried aggregate and laid it by trowel at 18mm thick.
Within just four hours the surface was hard enough to walk on and was ready for cars after 1-2 days.
RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing complies with SuDS* regulations which requires that rain water can pass through the aggregate and resin surface into the earth below, allowing it to flow into natural water courses or ground drainage systems. Its porous design ensures water can quickly and easily permeate the surface and allow homeowners to do their part to protect the environment.
London is and always has been a tree lined city. Some of the benefits are obvious, trees are beautiful to look at – marking the seasons with blossom, seeds and changing leaf colours, they provide homes to a variety of wildlife and on a more practical level create shade and shelter.
Trees have invisible benefits too; absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as part of the photosynthesis process which allows them to grow. This removal of CO2 from the atmosphere trees can reduce the effects of pollution by cleaning the air and reducing temperatures. Large leaf canopies catch rainfall and slow down the water’s progress from sky to the ground, helping to reduce flash flooding.
Trees also release oxygen into the atmosphere and their leaves catch dust and pollutants in the air preventing them from spreading further, they reduce smog formation, radiant energy from the sun is absorbed or deflected by leaves, this combination of factors reduces the incidence of asthma, skin cancer and stress-related illness.
Trees can even reduce crime! The presence of trees creates a more pleasant environment that people want to go out and enjoy. Simply having more people around to potentially discover and report crime and this deters criminal activity.
Many London Boroughs have embraced the need to preserve existing trees, replace diseased and dead trees and plant new trees, but planting and maintaining trees in an urban environment is not without problems.
A tree’s root system obviously needs access to water in order for the tree to survive, the roots also need to be able to move as they grow. However a natural earth setting is not possible in a pedestrianised street as it can get very muddy, slippery and be hard to keep leaf and litter free and trees are at risk of root damage or being uprooted entirely. Traditional tree grilles provide irrigation and protection for the tree roots but they are difficult to keep clean as litter, dog waste, cigarette stubs and even hypodermic needles get deposited or trapped between the bars.
The London Borough of Hackney asked Civil Engineering Contractor Volker Fitzpatrick to solve the problem of protecting the roots of the many trees which enhance the streets of Hackney, situated on the doorstep of the Olympic site.
RonaDeck Tree Pit System from Ronacrete was recommended for its SuDS compliance, ease of maintenance, flexibility and for the appearance of the resin bound gravel.
RonaDeck Tree Pit System is a natural aggregate finish surround for planted trees in public and private areas. RonaDeck Tree Pit System surrounds the tree in a solid yet flexible construction that is easily swept clean and has a porous structure that allows rainwater to seep immediately through to the root system and reduces the burden on surface water drainage.
Sub contractor AJ O’Connor purchased the RonaDeck Tree Pit System through specialist construction industry distributor WT Burdens and gradually the system has been applied over a large area.
AJ O’Connor excavated around each tree to a depth of 150-200mm and filled the excavation with gravel to within 50 mm – 75 mm of the surface, the required depth of RonaDeck Tree Pit System, depending on expected traffic. The two-part resin was mixed with a drill and paddle before being added to the kiln-dried aggregate component in a high capacity forced action mixer. The mixture was then laid on the prepared gravel base and levelled off; allowing a curing time of four hours for foot traffic and one day for vehicles.
Ronadeck Resin Bonded Surfacing has been laid onto external pathways and communal areas within the landscaped gardens and grounds of the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea. The museum, which opened in the summer of 2005, tells the story ofWales’ industrial and maritime heritage.
The building and landscaping was designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, and features over 7,000 m2 of interconnecting external pathways. The pathways needed to be slip resistant in all weathers with an attractive surface that complemented the overall design. Ronadeck Resin Bonded Surfacing is a hardwearing, natural surfacing system that offers excellent slip-resistance. It is also strong enough to take the museum’s regular vehicular service traffic. Ronadeck Resin Bonded Surfacing Winter Grade can also be applied in cold, damp conditions, an advantage on this project which was completed during the wet winter months.
Ronadeck Resin Bonded Scratch Coat was applied to regulate the surface of the substrate, before application of Ronadeck Resin Bonded Surfacing Buff Resin. Chinese Bauxite aggregate was immediately cast into the rapid curing resin, to ensure full penetration into the resin and left to cure for two hours. After being swept, the paths were ready for immediate use.
